<video:title>Kurt Masur: Mendelssohn - Symphony No 4 in A Major "Italian" - first two movements (MMF-032)</video:title>
<video:description>Kurt Masur is one of the great European conductors of our time who recently celebrated 60 years as a maestro. For 26 years he was Kapellmeister of the Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra, following in the footsteps not only of Wilhelm Furtwängler and Bruno Walter but of Felix Mendelssohn himself who was in charge of the orchestra for twelve years until his death in 1847. On this DVD Kurt Masur works with two young conductors on the first two movements of Mendelssohn's "Italian" Concerto. The masterclass is followed by a complete performance of the work with each of the four movements conducted by a student. Students: Daniele Rustioni, Huba Hollokoy</video:description>

<video:description>András Schiff is admired throughout the world for his sensitive and inspired performances of Schubert's piano music. His CDs of the complete piano sonatas are ranked among the finest ever recorded.

In this masterclass, András Schiff works with a student on three movements from Schubert's much loved Moments Musicaux. These six short keyboard pieces were written in 1828, when Schubert already knew that he was fatally ill. Despite the charm and tenderness of these works, Schiff's teaching brings out the kaleidoscopic, fleeting emotions and depth of feeling lying behindthe apparent simplicity of the music.</video:description>

<video:description>András Schiff, world-acclaimed pianist has in the past been primarily associated with his performances of the major keyboard works of J.S. Bach, Haydn, Mozart, Schubert, Schumann and Bartok. In 2004 he began performing the complete cycle of the 32 Beethoven Piano Sonatas in chronological order, having studied them from the original autograph scores or earliest editions. This meticulous attention to the composer's instructions have resulted in performances much praised for their freshness and authenticity even though they sometimes challenge traditional interpretations.

Here, András Schiff looks at the three great piano sonatas which end the cycle and on which Beethoven worked during final years of his life, Op 109, Op 110 and Op 111. He analyses each sonata in detail and discusses and demonstrates his personal interpretation and technique in playing these sublime works.</video:description>

<video:title>Steven Isserlis: Rachmaninov - Sonata for Cello and Piano in G minor Op 19 (MMF-008)</video:title>
<video:description>Steven Isserlis, one of the world's outstanding cellists, is a musician known for his strong ideas and passionate convictions about music. A champion of the works of Schumann, he also gets satisfaction in discovering and introducing into the repertoire works by lesser known composers which he considers deserve a wider audience. As well as giving concerts and recitals throughout the world, he is much sought after as a teacher. He is Artistic Director of the International Musicians' Seminar at Prussia Cove in Cornwall UK, the world-renowned residential workshop for talented young musicians, started by Hilary Behrens and the legendary Sandor Vegh.

In this masterclass, he works with Guy Johnston, former winner of the BBC Young Musician of the Year competition, on the first movement of Rachmaninov's Cello Sonata. The sonata has a history in Isserlis' family - his grandfather, a pianist, performed the sonata with Anatoly Brandukhov, the cellist for whom Rachmaninov wrote the sonata.</video:description>
